A PLEA FOR HELP

Are you a lover and supporter of art? We are a self-supporting website that is funded by our day jobs, side jobs and performances and workshops. While people may envy us living in Hawaii, remember that we are a long way from anywhere and that translates into a much higher cost of living and traveling (twice as high as many US mainland areas). Wages here are also fairly low, especially in consideration of the cost of living, so while we are not starving, we kind of just get by. However, There is a lot to be said about the Aloha Spirit and Lori's family is here and that is a great comfort for her. That said, we would like to make a plea for contributions to help fund Butoh Net and Butoh in Hawaii, i.e., Tangentz Performance Group. You contribution need not be large to make a difference and if you like what we are doing here and/or find it of use, consider a donation. You may not think that a few dollars could help, but I assure you that it would. If you would like to make a contribution, monetary or otherwise, here is our wish list:

Information
Believe it or not, it takes a lot of time digging on the Internet to find all of the information on Butoh teachers, performers and events. If you know of someone or something and you don't see it on Butoh Net, please inform us so we may share the information with others. That is the reason Butoh Net exists: to inform, educate and entertain people about Butoh Dance.

Money
Of any amount would be best, the more the better, but any amount, no matter how small. I could give you figures on the cost of specifics of our operation and you could even match a given amount. I would be happy to publish your name on Butoh Net with our thanks and a description of your sponsorship, say for the licensing fees for our name or the cost of web hosting for all of our files and address so that we can operate. Or your could remain anonymous, if you wish.

Computers
Ours is getting a bit old and we are hard pressed to replace it with anything newer. Our 1999 Macintosh 350MHz PowerMac keeps chugging along, but it must be shared between work for Tangentz and work for Butoh Net and it would help greatly to have a second machine. We prefer Apple Macintosh products. A new Apple PowerBook or iBook or a G5 PowerMac would be a dream, but anything with a G4 processor would be nice and anything with a G3 that has an Ethernet connection would be acceptable also. It does help to have a PC to check that the web pages are displaying correctly, though, so I would not be adverse to a PC with a Pentium III or newer chip.

Computer Peripherals
If we get a new computer, we would need to get a new monitor also. We'll be needing to replace ours as it is getting fuzzy around the edges and the color is no longer the best. Oh, to have a nice compact LCD instead of the huge old tube type 1994 NEC 17 inch we have. Apple makes some very nice ones.
We would love to be able to process video footage, but all we have is analog tapes. An analog to digital converter would allow us to convert this video to a digital form that could be processed with our computer and added to the website. The Formac Studio TVR has the highest resolution of any of the non-professional solutions (those run into the thousands of dollars) and is a good product for the money.

Digital Electronics
We would sincerely love to have a digital still camera to capture shots of our performances and save on developing costs. We could print only the ones that were good and those on our printer. We could also take photos of our rehearsals that would allow our sensei, Lori Ohtani, to get a better idea of what the dancers look like all together. For this same reason we would like a video camera as we could run the rehearsals and then review what we need to work on even when she is in that section. We would also be able to shoot our own video, not just documenting our work, but creating accompanying video like we have in the past when people have donated their time and equipment to create and edit the background video. Lori is very excited about this and has displayed a wonderful sense of use of video in her work and it would be so much easier if we actually had one of our own. Again, new would be great, but we would also be grateful for your old camera, if you are upgrading or replacing it with a newer one.

Employment
Hire us! Lori is a talented Butoh teacher, dancer and choreographer whose dream is to teach, choreograph and dance Butoh and work full time at it and get paid for it. Hawaii's small population base offers only a limited number of students and audience and while she teaches a class weekly and we produce and perform a few new pieces each year, she would like to share her gifts with more people and travel and quit her day job. She is also quite talented at costume and makeup design, theatrical and otherwise, having worked in the industry for 14 years. Her Butoh dance has been quite well received in Tokyo, Hawaii and the Mainland USA and she longs to bring her art to more places. If you need more Butoh in your life, consider hosting a workshop and/or performance!

Airplane tickets
As I stated above, Hawaii is a long way from anywhere and this makes it very difficult monetarily to travel to events like the New York Butoh Festival (hint, hint) or to perform anywhere besides Hawaii.

Accomodations
An offer of a place to stay while we teach and/or perform would be very kind and help us to keep our expenses to a minimum.

If I have forgotten anything that you would like to contribute (like help with a web site redesign to improve consistency in appearance and greater utility and better aesthetics, write to me at dan@butoh.net.
